L’ancienne caserne du XVIIIème témoigne de ce qui subsiste des anciens remparts démantelés de Vauban à l’endroit où l’ancien bras, aujourd’hui détourné, du fleuve de l’Escaut traversait les fortifications. Avec l’ancien hôpital général, son voisin mitoyen aujourd’hui classé monument historique, ils insufflent une épaisseur historique qui est le marqueur identitaire d’un site qui bénéficie aujourd’hui encore d’une mise à distance ; l’espace dégagé et boisé d’une des anciennes demi-lunes disparues des fortifications.

Des travaux d’aménagement datant de la fin des années 90, affectent l’ancienne construction à un restaurant et une bibliothèque universitaire ainsi qu’à un département d’enseignement artistique doté d’un Espace d’exposition dédié à l’art contemporain. Le programme du nouveau projet consiste à créer les locaux administratifs de la présidence de l’Université en reconfigurant les anciens programmes et en repensant totalement leur accès.

Le projet propose des accès spécifiques correspondant aux 3 façades réunies par un parvis pavé de pierre. Son architecture vise le geste juste entre le souci de la lisibilité de ces nouveaux accueils sans pour autant nuire à celle des bâtiments préexistants, entre l’affirmation d’une modernité juxtaposée à l’intégrité conservée des façades historiques. Elle vise un rapport de mise en valeur mutuelle entre ancien et nouveau autant par le dialogue des volumétries et des matériaux que par ses ajouts modernes élaborés autour de la mémoire et de l’allégorie.

L’espace central entre les deux ailes historiques est investi par l’accueil de la Présidence ; une extension en simple rez-de-chaussée fermée par une façade vitrée et couverte par un jardin suspendu. Au-dessus, deux prismes nets ceints de verre et d’inox poli transpercent ce tapis végétal. Il s’agit des volumes de la « porte » et de celui abritant les circulations verticales. Ces prismes sont deux arches laissant filer le regard à travers la transparence du verre. Transversalement, les parties pleines habillées d’inox poli dédensifient l’espace en renvoyant l’image du jardin et des façades. Clin d’œil au passé de la caserne, la combinaison de l’arche et des jardins étagés, évoque celle des remparts, conçus par Vauban, au sein desquels la porte est magnifiée par son échelle et sa richesse décorative.

Passé à l’intérieur, l’espace qui se découvre devant nous se présente comme une continuité des aménagements extérieurs. Un plafond acoustique de bois blond travaillé en facettes d’origami répercute un même esprit que celui de l’auvent du parvis. Retourné verticalement sur l’intrados des arches du sas d’entrée et de l’ensemble escalier, cet habillage de panneaux bois en facettes associé aux façades vitrées devient l’élément identitaire de la modernité du projet. Une présence architecturale qui fuit l’esprit de pesanteur et dont les caractères chaleureux et mouvant tempèrent la solennité des vieilles maçonneries.

The former 18th-century barracks testify to the remnants of Vauban's dismantled ramparts at the spot where a former branch of the Escaut River, now diverted, crossed the fortifications. Alongside the old general hospital, its adjoining neighbor now classified as a historic monument, they infuse a historical depth that is a defining identity marker of a site still benefiting from a sense of seclusion today, in the cleared and wooded space of one of the disappeared demi-lunes of the fortifications.

Renovation works dating back to the late 1990s repurposed the old building into a university restaurant, a library, and an art education department equipped with an exhibition space dedicated to contemporary art. The new project aims to create the administrative offices for the university presidency by reconfiguring the old programs and completely redesigning their access.

The project proposes specific accesses corresponding to the three facades, united by a stone-paved forecourt. Its architecture aims for a precise balance between ensuring the legibility of these new entrances without detracting from the preexisting buildings, and asserting a modernity juxtaposed with the preserved integrity of the historic facades. It seeks a mutually enhancing relationship between old and new through the dialogue of volumes and materials, and its modern additions are designed around memory and allegory.

The central space between the two historic wings is dedicated to the reception area of the Presidency: a single-story extension enclosed by a glass facade and covered by a hanging garden. Above it, two distinct prisms encased in glass and polished stainless steel pierce through this vegetative layer. These prisms represent the volumes of the "gateway" and the vertical circulation area. The prisms, functioning as two arches, allow views to pass through the transparency of the glass. Transversely, the solid parts clad in polished stainless steel reflect the garden and facades, thus reducing the density of the space. A nod to the barracks' past, the combination of the arch and tiered gardens evokes the design of Vauban's ramparts, within which the gateway is magnified by its scale and decorative richness.

Upon entering, the interior space reveals itself as a continuation of the exterior arrangements. An acoustic ceiling made of light-colored wood, designed with origami-like facets, echoes the same spirit as the porch's canopy. Vertically inverted on the underside of the entrance arches and the staircase assembly, this faceted wood paneling, combined with the glass facades, becomes the defining element of the project's modernity. This architectural presence avoids a sense of heaviness, and its warm and dynamic characteristics temper the solemnity of the old masonry.
