L’ancienne « cathédrale laïque » de 1933 comme certains l’ont dénommée est le théâtre de cette réhabilitation. Terme bien nommé tant le bâti emprunte à la fois aux signes architecturaux de l’église et du théâtre pour accueillir un complexe municipal aux programmes administratifs et culturels mêlés.

La restructuration urbaine du centre-ville entreprise dans le courant des années 90 dégage un nouveau rapport privilégié de la longue façade latérale de la construction par rapport à l’espace public. Le projet de restructuration/extension de la mairie utilise à son profit ce rapport pour créer un nouvel espace d’entrée et de circulation composé comme un « bas-côté » logé le long de la longue nef existante. Accessible au travers d’un petit square, la nouvelle mairie offre un nouveau visage plus ouvert et une lisibilité de circulation évidente. La « croûte » de pierre utilisée en contrepoint de la façade vitrée exprime un matériau de soubassement en même temps qu’il propose un clin d’œil à la référence houillère de l’ancienne ville minière. Les postes d’accueil des différents services ont fait l’objet d’un aménagement attentif incluant le dessin d’un mobilier spécifique qui participe à une atmosphère très personnalisée.

The old « secular cathedral » of 1933, as some have called it, is the scene of this revamp. A term aptly named as the building borrows both the architectural signs of the church and the theatre to accommodate a municipal complex with mixed administrative and cultural programs.

The urban restructuring of the city centre, undertaken in the course of the 90’s, releases a new privileged rapport of the long lateral façade of the construction in relationship with the public area. The restructuring/extension project of the town hall uses this rapport to its advantage to create a new entrance and circulation space composed as an aisle housed along the existing long nave. Accessible through a small square, the new town hall offers a new face, more open and clear circulation legibility. The stone “crust” used as counterpoint to the glazed façade expresses a base material while it acts as a reminder to the coal reference of the old mining town. The reception areas of the various services have been the subject of careful planning including the design of specific furniture which contributes to a very personalized atmosphere.
