Au démarrage des études à l’hiver 99, la grande architecture romantique de Charles Louis Ferdinand DUTERT imposait encore son faste avec simplicité et évidence. Cette présence emblématique de la vie culturelle de Roubaix à la fin du XIXème siècle restait néanmoins une énigme pour beaucoup. Désaffecté au lendemain de la seconde guerre mondiale, oublié derrière les grilles du jardin qui l’entoure, rongé par l’humidité, le mérule et un départ d’incendie, l’édifice qui abritait l’ancien musée de Roubaix dans la partie sud du site de l’école nationale des Arts Industriels attendait un sauvetage promis par son classement à l’inventaire supplémentaire des Monuments Historiques en 1989.
La réhabilitation entreprise entre en adéquation avec le départ de la collection d’œuvres d’art pour le musée de « La Piscine » et la volonté de la direction de l’ENSAIT de reconquête des lieux emblématiques. La démarche architecturale présente le double souci de restitution des décors et harmonies d'origine et de la lisibilité des apports modernes dans un rapport de mise en valeur.
L’établissement d’un niveau supplémentaire dédié à l’administration vient se glisser dans la hauteur du 1er étage dont les altissimes fenêtres à croisées sont redessinées. La présence sculpturale des kiosques métalliques posés dans la galerie sud fait référence au statut de cette ancienne galerie de sculpture. Les sas thermiques vitrés des entrées mettent « sous vitrine » les anciennes boiseries sculptées. La gaine panoramique de l’ascenseur accentue la monumentalité de l’escalier et révèle la beauté de la structure métallique du couronnement.
La cour d’honneur est l’espace central de la composition mais son usage lié aux grandes manifestations exceptionnelles de l’école le réduit couramment à un vide. L’installation d’une structure métallique dont la concavité est habillée d’un tissu tendu apporte une présence
textile aux transparences subtiles et constitue un signal symbolique du renouveau de l’école.
At the beginning of studies in winter 99, the great romantic architecture of Charles Louis Ferdinand DUTERT still imposes its pomp with simplicity and evidence. This emblematic presence within the cultural life of Roubaix at the end of the 19th century was nevertheless an enigma for many. Abandoned in the aftermath of the Second World War, forgotten behind the gates of the garden around it, eaten away by humidity, fungi and fire, the building which hosted the old museum of Roubaix in the southern part of the site of the National School of Industrial Arts was awaiting a rescue promised by its classification in the supplementary inventory of Historical Monuments in 1989.
The rehabilitation undertaken is in line with the departure of the collection of works of art for the museum "La Piscine" and the will of the management of ENSAIT to reclaim the emblematic location. The architectural approach presents the double concern of restitution of the initial decorations and harmonies and the legibility of the modern contributions in an inflow of enhancement.
The establishment of an additional level dedicated to the administration comes to slip in the height of the 1st stage whose huge crossed windows are redrawn. The sculptural presence of metal kiosks in the southern gallery refers to the statues of this ancient sculpture gallery. The glazed thermal entry locks put "under glass" the old carved woodwork. The panoramic shaft of the elevator accentuates the monumentality of the staircase and reveals the beauty of the metallic structure of the crowning.
The court of honour is the central area of the composition but its use linked to the great exceptional manifestations of the school often reduces it to a void. The installation of a metal structure whose concavity is dressed with a stretched fabric brings a textile presence to subtle transparencies and is a symbolic signal of the renewal of the school.
