Inscrite dans le schéma directeur de requalification urbaine des cités minières Orient et Bellevue, la médiathèque se veut une borne posée à l’articulation entre la « promenade paysagère » aménagée sur une ancienne voie cavalière et les espaces boisées de la frange nord de la ville de Harnes. Elle s’installe en douceur dans la « coulée verte » à la manière d’un galet dans un cours d’eau. Les lignes sinueuses de la promenade piétonne bordée de végétal emmènent le promeneur sur le volume tout en courbes de la médiathèque, s’égarent un moment sur la concavité de la façade d’entrée pour former un parvis généreux avant de s’enrouler à nouveau le long du galbe bâti et rejoindre plus loin le chemin s’enfonçant sous les arbres. L’appartenance au paysage s’affirme par les rondeurs mais aussi les matériaux qui depuis la façade continue en bardeaux de bois à la couverture végétalisée ne parlent que de végétal. L’harmonie des formes et de la matière, cherche à décomplexer le visiteur dans son rapport à l’institution : c’est un abri rassurant et accueillant avec une partie de mystère qui suscite l’envie de rentrer à l’intérieur pour découvrir la singularité de l’espace promise par le profil extérieur.
L’auvent de la grande voûte de l’entrée abrite une façade vitrée où se montrent le hall, l’espace actualités et l’amorce de la zone dédiée à l’enfance. Dès l’entrée le visiteur est frappé par la luminosité de l’espace issue par la ponctuation de patios alignés. Ces inclusions extérieures dans le volume bâti apportant lumière et présence de la végétation au sein même du bâtiment articulent la cohabitation harmonieuse des espaces documentaires. Au travers des parois vitrées, la transparence des espaces est complète et les nuisances acoustiques maîtrisées, l’attractivité de différentes atmosphères est entretenue et le repérage des accès immédiatement lisible. Autour et au travers des patios, les surfaces documentaires s’enroulent dans un espace de fluidité accentué par la continuité courbe de la façade extérieure. Celle-ci s’enroule sur elle-même en s’engageant vers la zone boisée et culminant par une voûte sur une façade vitrée ouvre la médiathèque sur le paysage bucolique…
Within the scheme of the urban requalification of two mining towns, Orient and Bellevue, the media library aims to be a marker between the landscape promenade, set up on a former riders’ path, and the forest areas of the north side of the city of Harnes. It establishes smoothly in the “green corridor”, just like a pebble in the water. The winding lines of the pathway, surrounded by plants, guide the walker towards the curved shapes of the media library, then get lost around the concave entrance facade to form a large forecourt, and finally curl up upwards the outlines of the building and towards a small path sinking in the forest. The building belongs to the landscape thanks to its curves, but also to the materials of the facade, in wood shingles that carry on towards the green roof. The harmony between shapes and materials reflects the will to make the visitors comfortable with the institution: it’s a reassuring and welcoming shelter with a part of mystery that creates the curiosity to get in and to discover the strangeness of the place, forecasted by the outdoor lines.
The canopy of the main arch of the entrance houses a glass facade through which the lobby, the news area and the beginning of the kids’ area are visible. As soon as the visitors gets in, they are struck by the light of the place, due to the alignment of patios. These inclusions of outdoor features inside the volume, that bring light and plants in the heart of the building, punctuate the harmonious cohabitation of the information areas. Through the windows, the places’ transparency is complete and the acoustic disturbances are contained; the attractiveness of the different atmospheres is maintained and the identification of entries is immediately visible. Around and through the patios, the information areas curl up as a place of fluidity, even more emphasized by the curves of the outdoor facade. The latter winds towards the woods and peaks with a vault upon a glass facade. An opening on the pastoral landscape…
