Laboratoire d'analyse des sols
Soils analysis laboratory
Saint Laurent Blangy
« Sol hors sol »
« Soil above ground »

If there is an inspiring feature in the study of soils; it is this approach of the confinement, within the laboratories, of the cores collected on the sites. This transposition of soil “above ground” and the care given to its conservation paradoxically confer value to what we do not see or exceptionally; our sedimentary heritage.

Drawing from a fertile theme to add value to the building against the inconsistent sheet of asphalt that frames the neighbouring cattle market, the project develops a mass as suspended, “above the ground”, marked by a perforated metal veil simulating a pattern of superimposed layers of sediments. A giant light lantern, seeming to defy the gravity which modulates the tones, multiplies the perceptions, shows the volume built without revealing it altogether mixing opacity and transparency, surface or depth effects. This dreamlike dimension of the building treated as an enormous sampling in which users live is a symbol echoing the mission of sustainable agriculture study. Designed accordingly to the energy objectives of a passive construction, the metal shell of its facades reflects the bioclimatic design work on thermal comfort and the recovery of free heat inputs. If the architecture refers to an identity image of the institute, it also refers to a “sustainable” value.
