L’enjeu du projet est éminemment urbain ; il s’agit d’étirer plus au nord le cœur de la ville en reliant la ville basse à la ville haute. Il s’agit de faire évoluer le statut de la place de Gaulle, lieu charnière incontournable du flux automobile dans Cahors, en espace d’épanouissement de la vie urbaine où piétons et voitures coexistent sereinement. Il s’agit enfin de construire un complexe cinématographique ambitieux et son parvis en composant avec les  restes de l’ancienne caserne Bessières.

Le fil rouge du projet est de proposer une nouvelle promenade urbaine s’étirant depuis le centre-ville historique jusqu’à la place Bessières sous la forme d’un cheminement sous les arbres dont la logique exploite l’image identitaire de l’espace public cadurcien – l’espace du piéton traduit de manière simple et intuitive par une déambulation sous l’ombrage d’une canopée. Autour de la place du général de Gaulle repensée, elle adopte la souplesse du parcours circulaire par une forme arrondie évoquant une clairière au centre de laquelle s’organise la polyvalence du stationnement, de la commémoration, du marché et de la fête foraine.

S’édifiant sur les traces de l’aile disparue de la caserne, le cinéma recompose l’ancienne place d’armes selon son axe de composition historique et la transforme en un lieu ouvert à toutes ses appropriations possibles - du festival de blues aux projections de ses deux festivals de cinéma en passant  par la « fête du goût », les marchés des producteurs, les spectacles de rue ou encore les installations éphémères d’art urbain.  Le complexe cinématographique constitue l’élément identitaire fort de cette agora : couvrant l’ensemble du bâti, un large auvent d’inox à la sous face réfléchissante la surplombe en partie lui renvoyant son image symétrique suspendue. L’espace de l’imaginaire cinématographique est déjà là, dans ce cadrage ludique et dans l’image reflétée de la vie de la cité. En prolongation, le parti architectural met délibérément en scène la vie interne du cinéma comme « en vitrine »; l’accueil et es sorties des salles de cinéma participent au spectacle donné sur la place au même titre que toute manifestation spécifique du complexe telle que les cocktails d’avants premières ou encore l’activité associative. S’il revendique les traces historiques fondatrices en même temps que l’audace de la modernité,le complexe cinématographique n’oublie pas que dans sa proposition conjuguée de plaisirs individuels et collectifs, il est un lieu d’échange et de rencontres et traduit sa relation privilégiée entre « cinéma urbain et ville cinéphile »….

The challenge for this project is prominently urban; it is to stretch further to the north the heart of the city by connecting the lower town to the upper town. It is about developing the functions of the place de Gaulle, inescapable pivotal site of the traffic flow within the city of Cahors, until it becomes a pleasant space where pedestrians and cars can coexist serenely. And finally through the construction of an ambitious cinema complex and its square linked to the rest of the old Bessières barrack.

The main axis of the project is to create a new urban promenade which goes from the historical city centre to the Place Bessières while taking the shape of a pathway covered by trees whose logic exploits the public space identity of the city – the pedestrians place is translated in a simple and intuitive way by a stroll under the shade of a canopy. Around the redesigned place du Général de Gaulle, it adopts the flexibility of the circular pathway through a roundshape evoking a clearing in the centre of which is organised a versatility of parking, commemoration, marketplace and funfair.

Constructed on the remains of the lost wing of the barrack, the cinema reproduces the former military exercise place according to its historical composition axis and the transformation into a space open to all appropriations– from the blues festival to the screening of its two film festivals, the “fête du goût” or taste fest, the local markets, the street shows and to the temporary urban art installations. The cinema complex composes the strongest identity element of this agora: covering the whole of the built, a large stainless steel canopy with a reflective soffit which partly overhangs affirming its symmetrical and suspended image. The space of the cinematic imaginary is already there, in this playful frame and in the reflected image of the city life. In extension, the architectural party deliberately stages the internal life of the cinema through the windows showcasing the reception and the exits of the cinema both participating in the show given on the place in the same way as any specific event of the complex such as the before cocktails or associative activities. If it claims founding historical tracks at well as a daring modernity, the film complex does not forget that it is a place of exchange and meetings and translates its privileged relationship between "urban cinema and cinema city”....
